HELLO FROM WOFFF

Hello from the Women Over 50 Film Festival and welcome to our WOFFF Watchalong. Helen Selka, filmmaker and Team WOFFF member, introduces this week’s line-up of Russian films – the documentaries AFTER THE FACTS by Karen Pearlman and PUSSY RIOT: A PUNK PRAYER by Maxim Pozdorovkin and Mike Lerner; along with and the political comedy RALLY ON/OFF by Aleksandra Artemeva.

FILM TALK: KAREN PEARLMAN

AFTER THE FACTS director Karen Pearlman, join us from Australia for our Film Talk to tell us how she created her film about early female Soviet film editors using techniques they – and particularly Esfir Shub – used more than 70 years ago.

AFTER THE FACTS

Women. Editing. Power. Invisibility. Film editors are powerful. They are also usually invisible. Most editors in early film were women. This short documentary looks at how they wielded power and how their work was made invisible. AFTER THE FACTS by Karen Pearlman.

PUSSY RIOT: A PUNK PRAYER

Three women – members of the Russian feminist punk group Pussy Riot – face seven years in a prison for a satirical performance in a Moscow cathedral. But who is really on trial in the case – artists or the society they live in? PUSSY RIOT: A PUNK PRAYER by Mike Lerner and Maxim Pozdorovkin was filmed over the course of six months, this film tells the incredible story of three young women: Nadia, Masha and Katia.
For viewers in the UK, click the image below to access the film free on BBC iPlayer. Viewers outside the UK can access the film on dvd or on an on-demand platform.
This film is available on the iPlayer till June 2021.

RALLY ON/OFF

A group of people turn up at a Russian political rally. In RALLY ON/OFF by Aleksandra Artemeva, an older woman in the group remembers other rallies she’s been to in the past. Will her political actions today show that the future is in her hands?

NEXT WEEK’S WATCHALONG

Our next film, on Thursday 4 June, is a WOFFF selection FROM SCOTLAND WITH LOVE by Virginia Heath. This evocative film, made entirely of Scottish film archive, is a journey into the past exploring universal themes of love, loss, resistance, migration, work and play – all given voice by King Creosote’s poetic music and lyrics.
Click here for a link to the film (free access for people living in the UK) on the BBC iPlayer. Trailer below.
